The Art of Event Florals: Floressence Flowers’ Organic Approach
Eatherley Schultz, owner and creative director of Floressence Flowers, is renowned for her organic floral designs. With a deep appreciation for the creative process, she works closely with planners and clients to craft unique, impactful moments within every event.
In this Q&A, she shares her insights on floral artistry, the challenges of working with nature, and her dream of becoming a perfumer.
WHAT IS YOUR SIGNATURE STYLE?
Organic, nature-inspired designs.
HOW DO YOU DESCRIBE YOUR CREATIVE APPROACH?
Because we work closely with so many planners and clients, there is often a design board that serves as the initial start, or at the least some images. From there we brainstorm ideas with the clients to find one or two areas where we can create something special within their event. In this process, we learn how much creative freedom we have within the parameters of budget.
WHERE DO YOU SEARCH FOR NEW INSPIRATION?
Nature, clothing, art, and the landscape.
HOW DO YOU APPROACH TRENDS?
I like to lightly incorporate trendy new designs because it's usually fun and something different—all the while knowing it will pass.
WHAT IS THE MOST UNDER-APPRECIATED FLOWER?
Carnations... so many colors.
WHAT WOULD YOU RECOMMEND FOR SOMEONE WHO WANTS A LUSH DESIGN BUT HAS A LIMITED BUDGET?
Focus on certain elements of the design: head table, walkway, mantle. Make heavy impact in a few areas and the rest is less important.
IF YOU DESIGNED A TABLESCAPE WITHOUT FLORALS, WHAT WOULD YOU DO?
Lots of vegetables and candles. I love the look of stringed veggies— and styling with assorted vessels, beautiful fruits, and vines.
HOW FAR IN ADVANCE SHOULD PEOPLE HIRE A FLORAL DESIGNER?
Nine to six months is great. However, we love quick turn arounds too where there isn't time to second guess the design.
WHAT DO YOU WISH MORE PEOPLE UNDERSTOOD ABOUT WHAT YOU DO?
How physically challenging it is but also how much resourcefulness and creativity is needed. We have to constantly pivot, changing directions to be able to execute our events. We are working with mother nature and so many elements out of our control.
IF YOU WEREN'T A FLORAL DESIGNER, WHAT WOULD YOU BE?
A perfumer!!!! I dream of it.
