Shean Strong: Elevating Events with Thoughtful Floral Design

For Shean Strong, owner and creative director of Shean Strong Design, floral design is more than arranging flowers—it’s about telling a story. Known for his signature style of "refined relaxation," Shean creates events that are both elevated and deeply personal. Drawing inspiration from his clients, travel experiences, and nature, his designs are timeless yet fresh, blending artistry with thoughtful details.

In this Q&A, Shean shares his insights on trends, cost-conscious design tips, and the often-overlooked lisianthus, offering a glimpse into the artistry and dedication that define his work.

WHAT IS YOUR SIGNATURE STYLE?

Our style is best described as refined relaxation, creating events that are elevated and thoughtful while remaining nuanced and personal to the couple.

HOW DO YOU DESCRIBE YOUR CREATIVE APPROACH?

We approach creativity with a blend of artistry and thoughtful detail. Each project is carefully curated to tell a unique story, using timeless design principles with a fresh perspective. Our work reflects a deep connection to nature, often incorporating organic forms and seasonal elements. Whether for a large event or an intimate gathering, the focus is always on delivering a visually stunning and emotionally resonant experience that’s tailored to the occasion.

WHERE DO YOU SEARCH FOR NEW INSPIRATION?

I'm truly inspired by our clients—their venue, unique design style, and story. However, I find that travel has been a significant source of inspiration for me, and incorporating those experiences into my designs has always been invaluable.

HOW DO YOU APPROACH TRENDS?

I approach trends with a light touch, always ensuring they align with the client's story and the venue's character. It's important to me that the memories and moments we create feel genuine. When we do incorporate a trend, I strive to interpret it in a unique, personal way—just enough to nod to the trend while keeping the focus on authenticity.

WHAT IS THE MOST UNDER-APPRECIATED FLOWER?

The lisianthus is often overlooked, but it's such a gem. Its soft, rose-like petals and wide range of colors can add a touch of elegance and depth to any arrangement. When used thoughtfully, lisianthus brings a romantic, dancer feeling that can really enhance the overall depth of a design.

WHAT WOULD YOU RECOMMEND FOR SOMEONE WHO WANTS A LUSH DESIGN BUT HAS A LIMITED BUDGET?

I recommend focusing on reducing the guest count if cost is a concern. A smaller, more intimate gathering allows you to invest more in creating that lush, intentional design. For example, a 75-person event will naturally cost less than a 300-person one, allowing you to allocate more resources to achieving the look and aesthetics-- giving you freedom to prioritize meaningful design elements

IF YOU DESIGNED A TABLESCAPE WITHOUT FLORALS, WHAT WOULD YOU DO?

Designing without florals can be a wonderful opportunity to play with texture. I’d focus on incorporating elements like sand, stone, or wood, depending on the venue. Using a large, singular textural element can create a striking visual impact and set a distinct mood. This approach not only enhances the aesthetic but also adds a unique tactile experience for the guests.

HOW FAR IN ADVANCE SHOULD PEOPLE HIRE A FLORAL DESIGNER?

This varies based on the designer’s process. Because we take on a limited number of clients each year, we can accept bookings up to three years in advance, particularly for larger or more complex events. Typically, though, a range of about one year to seven months out is more common. This timeline allows for thorough planning and ensures we can deliver the perfect floral design for your special occasion.

WHAT DO YOU WISH MORE PEOPLE UNDERSTOOD ABOUT WHAT YOU DO?

While flowering might seem like the main focus, it’s actually just a small part of the job. The real work happens behind the scenes—countless emails, phone calls, scheduling, design proposals, logistics, concepts, schematics, timelines, and contracts. This meticulous planning makes up about 96% of what we do. On the day of the event, thanks to all the hard work and preparation, the actual execution goes smoothly and feels effortless.

IF YOU WEREN'T A FLORAL DESIGNER, WHAT WOULD YOU BE?

Owning a restaurant would be absolutely fabulous. With my love for interiors, community, food, and events, it feels like a natural next step. That said, part of me is also drawn to interiors, fashion, fabrication. Having said that, I know it would be something within the creative industry. What’s so exciting about this field is the freedom to explore and move seamlessly between mediums.
