How Kelsey Rae Designs Blends Collaboration, Travel Inspiration, and Tailored Experiences

What is your signature style?

My signature style leans toward modern luxury with a mid-century nod.

How do you describe your creative approach?

I take a collaborative approach with my clients. We work together to create a general direction and then start with mood boards and a color palette. Once they trust me and the vision, I’m able to take the reins and build out unique, fun design plans.

Where do you search for new inspiration?

Traveling is my main source of inspiration. I’m constantly inspired by local artisans and random things I find along the way. I’ll walk the streets of Europe and suddenly be hit with a new color palette idea just from seeing buildings in different shades. You can find inspiration in the most unexpected places!

What do you recommend investing most in?

I’m a big rentals, florals, and paper girlie! I think those three elements are key to pulling the vision together and creating an exciting, welcoming atmosphere for family and friends.

Team big or small: What type of events do you prefer?

I love big events—don’t get me wrong—but smaller ones often allow us to push the design further. We can stretch the budget and do some unique things with the details.

How far in advance should people hire a planner?

Twelve months out is ideal. I always recommend hiring a planner before booking a venue. There are many nuances involved in selecting a space, and we can offer insight before you sign the contract.

Best advice for a bride-to-be?

Focus on what you and your fiancé truly want for the day or weekend! It’s hard to tune out the noise and outside opinions, but keeping the focus on your love and the atmosphere you’re creating is what matters most. Trust the vendors you're guided to, and trust that the vision will come to life.

What do you wish more people understood about what you do?

We’re intentional about the clients we take on, which means we don’t do a high volume of events. Instead, we prioritize high-touch, tailored design and planning. We’re not just checking vendors off a list; we’re getting to know our clients on a deep level, understanding what they truly want, and then matching them with the best fit.

Some weddings require over 500 hours of work! That’s something people don’t always realize. There are numerous details, vendor conversations, meetings, and design chats involved in ensuring an event runs smoothly.

If you weren’t a planner, what would you be?

An interior designer or travel agent! My job already dabbles in both, but those are the things that bring me so much joy.
